What happens at an IV drip appointment

IV drips are only ever given face to face, in a clinical setting. Here’s what to expect.

  1. Step 1

    Suitability check

Before anything is given, a clinician asks about your health, medicines and allergies, and checks things like your blood pressure and pulse. If a drip isn’t suitable for you, it won’t go ahead.

  2. Step 2

    What’s in your drip

Your clinician explains exactly what’s in the drip before it starts, and you can ask any questions you have.

  3. Step 3

    Your drip

A clinician places a small, thin tube (a cannula) into a vein, usually in your arm, and the fluid runs in slowly while you sit comfortably. You’re monitored throughout.

  4. Step 4

    Afterwards

The cannula is removed and a small dressing applied. You’re told what to look out for, such as soreness, redness or swelling around the site, and who to contact if you feel unwell.

Suitability

Who shouldn’t have an IV drip

A clinician checks your suitability before every drip. A drip may not be right for you if:

  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have heart or kidney problems
  • You have certain blood or metabolic conditions
  • You’re allergic to any of the ingredients
  • You take certain medicines
  • You’re under 18 — the service is for adults

If you’re unsure, ask us before you book. If a drip isn’t suitable, it won’t go ahead.

Straight talking

We don’t make health claims about IV drips. Most people get the vitamins and minerals they need from a balanced diet, and a drip isn’t a replacement for medical care. If you have symptoms that worry you, speak to a GP.

If you feel unwell afterwards

Call 999 if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or lips, or chest pain. For other urgent concerns, call NHS 111.
